In this the tubercles are chiefly on the face and joints. There is loss of hair, except on the scalp; voice, hoarse and nasal; and the disease is said to be contagious and hereditary. It most frequently attacks the feet; and gives the lower extremity a fancied resemblance to the leg of an elephant, whence its name. The seat of the disease seems to be in the lymphatic vessels and glands, and in the subcutaneous areolar tissue: the inflammatory condition of which is accompanied with general morbid symptoms. Medicine has little or no effect on this loathsome complaint. See Lepra.
