Circ. 1688; at first simply convivial, afterwards in Queen Anne's reign exclusively political, its members devoted to the Hanoverian succession; among them were Addison, Steele, Walpole, etc. (Christopher Cat supplied the club with mutton pies.) Sir G. Kneller, a member, accommodated a newsized canvas to the height of the walls; hence Kit-cat, - three quarters' length.
