A dark line or band of atmospheric origin in the solar spectrum, being caused by the absorption of certain parts of the spectrum by aqueous vapor. It is held to be of some importance as a weather predictor, a strong rain-band showing excess, and a weak rain-band a deficiency of moisture in the atmosphere.
