A Russian poet (1800-44); served in the army, and afterwards lived on an estate near Moscow until 1843, when he set out to travel; the year following he suddenly died in Naples. His best-known works are: "Eda" (1826), a delineation of Finland character and nature; and "The Gipsy", a picture from Russian high life.
