September 6, 1781. In view of the siege of Cornwallis in Yorktown, Clinton attempted a diversion upon Connecticut. Benedict Arnold commanded. The only spirited resistance was offered by the garrison of Fort Griswold, 157 in number. After losing 192 of his 600 regulars Arnold carried the fort. No quarter was given. Only twenty-six escaped. New London was laid in ashes, and before sunset the enemy returned up the Sound. The descent was wanton and useless.
