-
A gutter in a bone, like that used for carrying off rain. Some of these cavities are intended to facilitate the sliding of tendons, such as the Gouttiere Bicipitale or Bicipital groove. Others, as the Gouttiere sagittale or Sagittal groove, lodge blood-vessels and especially veins. Others, again, are merely intended for the support of certain organs; as the Gouttiere basilaire or Basilary fossa, which supports the medulla oblongata.
