Born in 1810, of Kentucky, politician. In 1832 he became an earnest Abolitionist. In 1845 he established the True American, an anti-slavery paper, at Lexington, Ky., and was obliged to fortify the publication office against violence. He was a captain in the Mexican War. He supported General Taylor for the Presidency in 1848, Fremont in 1856, and Lincoln in 1860. He was sent as Minister to Russia in 1861, and again in 1863.
