An expression applied by Recklinghausen to the cells apparently identical with white blood corpuscles, found in various tissues, especially in areolar tissue, near blood vessels and in situations where inflammatory or reparative processes are taking place. Their function appears to be to act as agents (a) in removing some part, such as the tails or gills of transforming amphibian larvae; (b) in the active degeneration of nerve and muscle; (c) in removing any dead substance or irritant, such as bacteria or dead cells, thus playing the part of phagocytes.
