The physiological units which determined the form of each living creature. These units were regarded as intermediate between chemical molecules and cells, and consequently must correspond to groups of molecules. They are quite useless as an interpretation of heredity, but have this advantage that they forced a more and more searching analysis into the "bearers" of heredity.
