Born in 1813, was admitted to the bar in 1837. He was Secretary of State for Illinois from 1841 to 1842, and a Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court from 1848 to 1853. He represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat from 1855 to 1861 and as a Republican from 1861 to 1873.
