A plant genus in the family MYRTACEAE, order Myrtales, subclass Rosidae. It is best known for cloves, the source of an oil rich in EUGENOL from the flower bud. The botanical name has varied: Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L. M. Perry = Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. = Caryophyllus aromaticus L. The Eugenia-Syzygium name is discussed in Amer. J. Bot 59:423 1972.

- An inorganic water-soluble platinum complex. After undergoing hydrolysis, it reacts DNA produce both intra interstrand crosslinks. These crosslinks appear to impair replication and transcription of DNA. The cytotoxicity cisplatin correlates with cellular arrest in G2 phase cell cycle.
