(1818-1869), was a member of the Indiana Legislature in 1844 and 1845. He distinguished himself at the battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican War. He led a brigade at the battle of Shiloh and fought at Perryville. He commanded a division of the army of the Cumberland at Stone River, Chattanooga and Chickamauga. He represented Kentucky in the U.S. Congress as a Republican from 1865 to 1867. He was sent to receive Alaska from the Russian Government and assume control of the territory in 1867.
