(1795-1864), Danish archaeologist, made a careful study of the ancient Norwegian and Icelandic sagas, especially those concerning expeditions to North America. He held that the Scandinavians discovered America in the tenth century, that the coast as far as Massachusetts and Rhode Island had been partially colonized, and that the Vikings reached Florida. His best known work is "Antiquitates Americanae."
