born in 1832, came to America from Bavaria in 1838. He was secretary to President Lincoln from 1860 to 1865. He was U.S. Consul at Paris from 1865 to 1869. He wrote "The Outbreak of the Rebellion," and, with Colonel John Hay, a voluminous work called "Abraham Lincoln: a History."
