Founded, 1853, by an ex midshipman, Ned Buntline. A secret, exclusive, political order; none to be admitted whose grandfathers were not American natives; in answer to every question, they "knew nothing." They maintained-(1) repeal of all naturalization laws ; (2) none but native Americans for office; (3) a pure American common school system; (4) war on Romanism.-Bartlett's Americanisms.
