Of Fuchs, an instrument consisting of a closed tube the lower portion of which is of a smaller diameter than the upper. The lower portion is graduated; finely pulverized salt of known weight is placed in the lower part, a weighed quantity of milk and a known quantity of salt are mixed and poured into the apparatus, and the amount of undissolved salt read off. As 100 parts of water dissolve 36 of salt, the amount undissolved by the milk will give the quantity of water. [Gr.]
