(1762-1830), represented Virginia in the U. S. Congress from 1790 to 1799, 1801 to 1803, and in the Senate from 1804 to 1815. In 1826 he was a member of the Virginia Legislature, and was Governor of the State from 1826 to 1829. He was a skillful parliamentary leader.
