(Feud.) A surety given by a lord for his tenants, or by a tything for its members, making the lord or the tything responsible for the were, or money payment of offences committed by those who might abscond. The tythings, as thus pledged, were called Frithborhs, peace-boroughs. This word became corrupted into Friborhs, and the Normans hence invented the phrase Frankpledge. See Leet, Court.
