(1806-1863), entered the navy in 1822, and from 1849 to 1852 was active in suppressing the African slave trade. At the beginning of the Civil War he was placed in command of the western flotilla. In 1862, in connection with the army of General Grant, he compelled Fort Henry to surrender and aided in a combined attack upon Fort Donelson. He succeeded in capturing Island No. 10 from the Confederates, and in 1863 was promoted rear-admiral. He was one of the most noble and courageous officers of the U. S. navy.
