A name given to certain fishes from their skins being granulated like a file. The European file-fish is a common inhabitant of the Mediterranean. It has the power of inflating the sides of the abdomen at pleasure, and grows to the size of 2 feet. Another variety is 12 or 14 inches long, and is a native of the Indian and American seas, as well as of the Red Sea.
