(1807-1864), a U. S. Senator from New Jersey from 1842 to 1851, was candidate for Vice-President in 1856 on the Republican ticket, and was Attorney-General for New Jersey from 1857 to 1861, when he was appointed Minister to France, where he served during the Civil War, till his death.
