(1807-1866) An Ohio lawyer from 1841 to 1846, became adjutant-general of militia in 1846, and in the Mexican War commanded at Camarago against General Urrea. He was a Congressman from Iowa from 1857 to 1861, when he was commissioned brigadier-general and gained a great victory at Pea Ridge, Ark. He commanded Fort Leavenworth during the Price raid in 1864, and was U. S. Commissioner to negotiate Indian treaties.
