[French, Latin] Light petroleum oil; that portion of petroleum which distils between 50° and 75° C. It is a colorless, inflammable liquid, of strong odor, and consists of a mixture of hydrocarbons of the fatty series. It is also called Petroleum B. (Benzinum petrolei, G.P.), to distinguish it from Coal-tar b., a mixture of hydrocarbons of the aromatic series obtained by the distillation of coal-tar oil.
