These are two in number on each side of the throat, one of which is termed anterior, the other posterior. The anterior arch arises from the middle of the velum palati, at the side of the uvula, and is fixed to the edge of the base of the tongue. The posterior arch has its origin, likewise, from the side of the uvula, and passes downwards to he inserted into the side of the pharynx. The anterior arch contains the circumflexus palati, and forms the isthmus faucium. The posterior arch has within it the levator palati, and between the arches are the tonsils.
